too much F & O, as over leveraging is very harmful for the overall health of
your portfolio. The sectors which were in Focus in 2006 were Construction,
Cement, Power, Power equipment, Telecom, Auto, Auto ancillaries,
Engineering, Sugar, etc. sectors. I think the next happening sectors would
be Textiles as the winter demand for clothes will pick up. *

    - *Elimination of MFA  have given opportunity as well as a threat. *
    - *Opportunity because markets will no longer be restricted *
    - *Threat because markets will no longer be guaranteed by quotas and
    even the domestic market will be open to competition.*

*India is net beneficiary of the elimination of MFA quotas for two reasons:

*1. Evidence indicates that India's exports had been constrained by MFA
quotas.*

*2. The MFA quotas may have discriminated against export of cotton products,
products in which India appears to have a strong comparative advantage. *

    - *Self-reliant in raw materials*
    - *Cotton – an age-old strength*
    - *Presence across the value chain*
    - *Cost competitiveness is the advantage*
    - *Entrepreneurship on higher learning curve*
    - *Composition of India's exports basket*

*Some Features of Indian Textile Sector:*

    - *India is the third largest manufacturer of cotton*
    - *fifth largest manufacturer of manmade fibers*
    - *Second largest spindelage capacity in world after China*
    - *India imports raw materials from cotton to synthetic fibre worth US
    $ 1.5bn whereas china which imports US $16bn, 25% of its export sales*
    - *China one of the largest producers of cotton, imports 12-15mn
    tonnes, approximately 20% of total requirements*
    - *Huge capacities in yarns and weaving is advantage to the Indian
    textile industry*

*This year the cotton production has been excellent and this has depressed
the cotton prices in the Indian markets. *

*There has been a price slide ranging from three to five percent or Rs.500to
Rs.700 per candly(of 355.56 kg) across all varieties in the last few months
as the market is witnessing heavy arrivals. It is expected that the cotton
prices will slid to all time low in mid-January due to peak arrival of
cotton bales to the tune of 2 lack to 2.25 lakh bales per day,  as compared
to 1.7lach to 1.9 lakh bales per day in the same period previous year. This
has already depressed the global cotton prices. It is to be noted that
unlike last Deewali, when the daily arrivals were 45, 000 bales or so this
year during the same time the cotton arrivals have swelled to 76, 000 bales
which indicated the volume surge in the cotton markets across India. Thus
textile companies are up on the raw material front and this is a major
advantage. *

*Cotton –an ageold strength for the Indian manufacturers:*

    - *3rd largest manufacturer of cotton as well strong presence in
    cotton yarns and fabric segment*
    - *Higher production levels, India lags in terms of yield (low yield
    rate)*
    - *With average yield of cotton at 321 kg/ha much below the global
    average of 584 kg/ha*
    - *Of available natural fiber cotton used 58% as RM of mill
    consumption in India*
    - *Also other RM synthetic fibers such as polyester, viscose, acrylic
    and polypropylene accounting for around 39% of raw material consumed*
    - *Internationally the fiber composition for synthetic to natural is
    60:40 but reverse for domestic market*

*Besides the synthetic fibres like Polyester, viscose, acrylic [Hanil is the
